I have been amazed at the huge number of Story Time days and times available all throughout Washington County at all the Libraries! There are so many opportunities for your child to go to Story Time in Southern Utah and I hope you are all taking advantage of it!
❤️ ❤️ ❤️
I have personally met so many of the librarians and they are amazing people with the biggest love for not only books and reading, but for your children. I was touched the first time I took my daughter to story time here in St. George and loved how kind and patient the librarians were with all the children.
That being said, I had no idea what to expect at story time or what I should do as a mom. Do I sit with my kid? Do I stand in the corner? Am I even supposed to stay? Even typing this out I feel silly admitting that because now the answers are no brainers, but as a mom without older kids who have been, I really wasn't sure.
I am going to take my awkward unsurity and give you all the answers up front of what you should and shouldn't do so that you can be the mom who walks in like its your tenth time, even if it is your first time bringing your child to story time. Honestly, it's probably a good refresher for anyone taking your kids to story time at the library!
For many youngsters, this will be a first group experience. Here are a few Do's and Don'ts for story time that will make the experience that much better!
WHAT TO DO WHEN I TAKE MY CHILD TO STORY TIME
Do sit with your child, or hold them in your lap
Do model positive behavior for the children
Do join in the fun by listening and participating in the story time activities with your child
Do leave toys, treats, drinks, and other distractions at home
Do turn off your cell phone
Don't feel bad if your child has trouble settling down or starts to cry, just take them out and always try again!
Don't forget to check out theme-related books before you leave
Don't leave the room during story time to do other things
Don't bring any food or drinks to the Library
Don't forget to have fun watching your child learn
A note from your local librarian: If the Story Time becomes too loud and chaotic, the librarian doing story time is forced to end early. We understand that it's hard with small children, but we appreciate parents taking children out if they are disruptive to others enjoyment of Story Time. Our other Children's programs, Art Club and Science Club, are for children 8-12. Children under the age of 8, need to be accompanied by a parent in the Library. We don't mind a younger sibling attending with an older one, but the parent needs to stay with the child who is under the age of 8, even if the older child is there. Story Times are an introduction to the exciting world of books and reading. Help your child choose books to take home from the library and make time to read to your child everyday.
