10 Things to Tell Your Children

By Gwendolyn Dattage, November 5, 2018

Can I just tell you, we have some seriously amazing ladies as our children's librarians here in Southern Utah. I thought it would be fun to get to know them and I have honestly had more fun than I thought! I asked them a lot of questions, but the one that stood out the most was this: If you could tell Children everywhere one thing, what would you tell them? I honestly thought 99% of them would just say, "Go to the library". That is what a librarian is supposed to say right? But instead I got the best answers and actually got a little teary eyed thinking about what they wanted to tell children, and how amazing it would be if all the children in the world could actually hear these 10 things that were said by our librarians. These 10 librarians showed me how much they care about your children, and I as a mom, am grateful to have such wonderful ladies influencing my kids.

Hopefully lots of moms read this and pass it on to their children, because I really love what they all said, and think all children should hear these things.

Here is a little sneak peak of a few things they would tell your children, the rest is in each of their articles below.

10 Things our Librarians Would tell our Children

  1. Don’t give up if something is hard. If you can’t do it the first time you try, keep trying. If it’s something you really want, but it seems too hard, don’t just give up. Be tenacious! It’s a great quality to cultivate and will help you your entire life!

  2. Watch and be observant. Watch and look before you do. Good storytellers are observant. Don't rush. Just have fun. Oh, and have your mother bring you to the library!

  3. Read a little every day--you will learn about the world!

  4. You are an amazing individual that can do anything you truly desire. BE AMAZING!

  5. You can do anything with the right book.  Being able to read opens doors that would otherwise be closed.  Want to be a magician?  Read a book.  Want to learn how to code?  Read a book.  Want to figure out what it takes to be an astronaut?  Read a book.

  6. Read lots of different type of books! If you have not fallen in love with books and reading, you just have not found the right type of book yet! There are so many different things to read about. Find your passion, read about it, and give it 100%.

  7. No matter what, know that you are loved. I think that children knowing they are loved would solve so many problems.

  8. Read every day. It will take you on adventures all over the world!

  9. Always be curious and open to learning.

  10. Travel as much as possible. The world is a marvelous creation and there are infinite learning opportunities out there. Limiting your scope to just one area or state I feel is a mistake. All over there are interesting people with unique stories. Just travel and take the time to listen to others.

I have to tell you, I had so much fun learning that the Nancy Drew series were some of the librarians favorite books. I read every single one of them growing up and still go back and re read them as an adult! I was so surprised to hear so many others loved them too! Now I am curious, how many of you have read Nancy Drew and loved those mysteries growing up?

Now, click on each librarian and get to know them because there are some silly stories, favorite book recommendations, and fun things to learn about each of them!
