Southern Utah has some pretty incredible Librarians and I am excited to tell you about all of them! They do so much for our kiddos and really provide a great service to all of Southern Utah. Today I want you to meet one of our Washington County Children's Librarians.

Meet Mrs. Mann

Mrs. Mann has been a librarian for 33 years. She worked 18 years as an elementary school librarian and almost 15 years with the Washington County Library System. Mrs. Mann absolutely loves being a librarian. She said everyday is so different and unique while working at the library. The best thing working here is the stories- when a past student comes in and asks if I remember them I love seeing them as an adult with a child of their own. Time flies.

Asking librarians their favorite children's book is really a mean trick. I loved Mrs. Mann's answer when she looked at me and said, "Usually the book that's in my hand". Isn't that the truth. She loves reading and discovering new books. She especially loves reading favorites from the past. As a child her favorite book was Dick and Jane. She would read it over and over and over after she learned to read. She said the pictures were kind and gentle, and it was such a comforting book.

Outside of work, Mrs. Mann loves art, music, and gardening. She said she still has to come back to the library to get a "how to" book on whatever her current project is. On the weekends she usually spends her time finding fun things to do for story time and new ideas.

Mrs. Mann told me something she thought you might find interesting. She didn't learn to read until the 3rd grade. It just never clicked for her until one day she was outside looking at a star chart and up at the constellation Orion. They said it was called Orion and then pointed to the word on the star chart. Suddenly words had meaning and it all clicked. She loved reading after that.

When I asked her what she would tell all children if she had the chance, she said something that I love, "Watch and be observant. Watch and look before you do. Good storytellers are observant. Don't rush. Just have fun. Oh, and have your mother bring you to the library!". I loved it

Go visit Mrs. Mann at the St. George Library Branch. Go listen to her story time or ask her what book you might like. I promise, she will always be able to find you a great book!
