We Love our Southern Utah Librarians: Meet Mary!

Mary Kay is a Children's Librarian at the St. George Branch

By Gwendolyn Dattage August 1, 2018

Southern Utah has some pretty incredible Librarians and I am excited to tell you about all of them! They do so much for our kiddos and really provide a great service to all of Southern Utah. Today I want you to meet one of our Washington County Children's Librarians.

Meet Mary

Mary has been a children's librarian for over six weeks now and already loves it! She started at the St. George Library at the end of the summer just in time for fall. Prior to becoming a librarian, she homeschooled her two children for six years and supported her husband in his military career during multiple deployments. I think I can speak for the community when I say, thank you for his service! We are grateful.

Mary's favorite children's book is The Piggy in the Puddle. As a child, her mom would read that book to her and she can still remember the exaggerated emotions her mom would use when reading it. It's a humorous book about a piggy not wanting to get into the mud puddle to take a bath. Her parents and brother gladly jump in, but for some reason sister piggy is reluctant to join her family.

When asking Mary what the best thing about being a children's librarian is, the answer was the opportunity to express her creative side with Art Club. At home she enjoys quilting and finding ways to reuse items around her home which leads her to creating crafts. Side note here: did you know that they offer Art and Science clubs at the St. George Library? Check it out!

Outside of work, Mary enjoy's swimming, biking, and hiking. Another past time that she always looks forward to is watching her daughter play softball. Mary and her son are kindred spirits in their love of books whether old school paperback or audiobook style! Mary and her husband adore taking dance lessons together which they have dappled in since they were seniors in high school! On the weekend, Mary looks forward to spending time with her family. Friday night is movie night and Sunday evening we reserve for game night. How fun!

An interesting fact about Mary is that she has lived in over one fifth of the United States; she has lived in ten out of the fifty states. Overall, she has visited or been to half the states in our great country; that equates to twenty-five states she has been to in one way or another. That is amazing! How many states have you lived in or even just visited?

Growing up she honestly didn't have a favorite book. In school, she struggled with reading and it wasn't until high school that she began to cherish books and all they have to offer. For those of you struggling with reading she encourages you to keep at it and never give up. Books open up amazing new worlds and vast amounts of information. It's definitely worth the struggle!

To children everywhere Mary says, "I would encourage you to travel as much as possible. The world is a marvelous creation and there are infinite learning opportunities out there. Limiting your scope to just one area or state I feel is a mistake. All over there are interesting people with unique stories. Just travel and take the time to listen to others."

If you haven't met Mary, go visit her at the St. George Library Branch and ask her to help you find a book. She knows about all the good ones that no one knows about!
