We Love our Southern Utah Librarians: Meet Deanna!

Deanna is a Children't Librarian at the New Harmony Branch

By Gwendolyn Dattage, August 1, 2018

Southern Utah has some pretty incredible Librarians and I am excited to tell you about all of them! They do so much for our kiddos and really provide a great service to all of Southern Utah. Today I want you to meet one of our Washington County Children's Librarians.

Meet Deanna

Deanna has been a "real librarian" for 10 years.  Prior to that, she worked as a sub for a year before being hired to work at the New Harmony library--a dream come true! However, in reality she has worked off and on in the library in some form or other for most of her life.  As a youth she got to help check out books whenever the Bookmobile would come to town.  During her school years, she was an aid in both the Cedar Jr. High library as well as the Cedar High Library.  From there she went on to work at the SUU Media Center.  After married life, and being shipped all over the world with her sweet husband,  who was a B-52 pilot in the Air Force, she would sub in the libraries in the school system.

Growing up Deanna read many many Nancy Drew books.  Deanna and her mother would take turns reading them. When asked about her favorite book, she responded that that was like asking a person working in the candy store to name their favorite piece of chocolate--it can't be done.  However, this week, just for me, she made an exception. Deanna recently read her own children's favorite book, The Monster At The End Of This Book! to her little people at the library.  After having them ask her to read it over and over that day, she decided she had to use it more.  It is written by Jon Stone and Michael Smollin.  She said, "It is a very entertaining book, and fun to fluxuate your voice when you read it.  When I said I read it to my very own children, that was over 30 years ago, as my baby is now 30. I shared it with her daughter yesterday, and she too, kept asking me to read it over and over."  It's a keeper for sure.

When I asked Deanna her favorite thing about being a children's librarian she said, "The best thing about being a children's librarian is of course the little people--they love me no matter what." They truly do! I know my kids love the "story time lady"!

As far as hobbies, she said it wouldn't be fair to her job, if she didn't mention reading at the top of the list. She is also an avid (that is putting it mildly) garage sale fanatic.  Oh the bargains--this is where she gets many of her ideas for story time.  Last but certainly not least she loves scrap booking, and embroidery.

Deanna has six children and said they think she is weird (in a loving way) no matter what.  But, her 24 grandchildren think she is perfect! Sounds like a pretty great grandma to me!

There are many things Deanna would tell the little people, and she said to narrow it down would be just as hard as picking out my favorite book. However, she said, "if no matter what, they can know they are loved, I think that would solve so many problems.  It makes me, as a grown-up, so happy when my little people see me out in public and come and give me a hug!  It just makes me sick that we can't show the affection we used to be able to give.  My friend calls them 'healing hugs' and I so agree."

If you haven't met Deanna, go visit her at the New Harmony Branch and ask her to help you find a book. She knows about all the good ones that no one knows about!
